Sounders Find a Sunny Win.
The Seattle Sounders hosted San Diego FC at home Wednesday night, looking to maintain their unbeaten record at Lumen Field.
The match opened with some early opportunities from the Sounders, but none resulted in serious threats on goal. Tensions rose in the 7th minute when fans called for a handball on a San Diego defender, though no penalty was given.
Despite creating chances, the Sounders often looked more focused on crafting the perfect finish than taking direct shots. A non-contact injury to defender Kim Kee-Hee early in the first half forced Seattle into an early substitution and set a more cautious, defensive tone for the remainder of the half.
San Diego ramped up the pressure late in the first half, forcing Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei into action. Frei made a notable save in the 43rd minute as San Diego pushed hard in the final third. Still, neither team managed to score, and the half ended 0-0.
The breakthrough came in the 58th minute when Jesús Ferreira scored his first goal of the season, assisted by Paul Rothrock. That goal proved to be the difference-maker.
Seattle controlled much of the second half, generating several more opportunities in the box, but Ferreira’s strike remained the lone goal of the match.
The Sounders next face Minnesota United on Sunday, July 1.
As always,
Go Dawgs
