My Top 10 Sports Moments of 2025
As we begin to enter 2026, I wanted to look back into the last year and compile my top sports moments of the year. This list isn’t in order of importance or by what I consider most memorable, just a list
University of Washington’s Men’s soccer winning their first ever national championship. The team went into the tournament unseeded and slowly paved their way towards the college cup becoming the first team to win 6 road matches in a single tournament. The Huskies won the game in a sudden death overtime against NC State in a 3-2 win.
Seattle Torrent (and Vancouver Goldeneyes) play their first games in the Professional Women’s Hockey League. The Seattle Torrent in their inaugural home opener against Minnesota broke the attendance record for the largest crowd at a professional women’s hockey game with 16,014 fans in attendance (including myself). Though the game resulted in a loss, the city showed up big for women’s hockey and has continued to throughout the season.
University of Washington Women’s Soccer winning in penalty kicks in the Big Ten Championship: As both a women’s soccer fan as well as a student at the University of Washington I couldn’t not include the run that the women’s soccer program had this season. A 1-1 game between the 13th ranked Huskies and 9th ranked Spartans led to a fitting ending, penalty kicks. Earlier that week, goalkeeper Mia Hamant who had been awarded the Big Ten tournament team honors in the prior season, passed away after her fight with kidney cancer. Jadyn Holdenried kicked things off for the Huskies netting her penalty after revealing a t-shirt saying “For Mia” on it. This win represents that grit that the Huskies had, playing their way through the NCAA tournament with this ideal at the back of their mind.
Cal Raleigh Dumping Big: The last MLB season a new name was rising in conversations about home runs, the Big Dumper. Going into the 2025 season, the record holder for most home runs ever hit by a catcher in a season was in 2021 with Salvador Perez hitting 48 homers. Over in Seattle, Ken Griffey Jr. hit 56 in both 1997 and 1998 respectively. Cal Raleigh added more to Seattle’s already sweet season with hitting 60 home runs in 2025- making history.
Women’s Euro’s: This summer Switzerland hosted the women’s Euros with 16 teams playing in the tournament. Two newcomers joined in this year participating in their first ever Euro, Poland and Wales. Poland finished 3rd in group C with Natalia Padilla scoring the first ever goal for Poland in the tournament. Wales- being in the group dubbed “group of death” finished 4th in the table with Welsh legend Jess Fishlock fittingly scoring the first goal.
ALCS Game 5: Seattle Mariners fans had the season of dreams in 2025. After spending the first five innings down 2-1 against the Toronto Blue Jays, Eugenio Suárez hit a grand slam which not only allowed for the Mariners to beat the Blue Jays 6-2 but also gave Seattle their first ALCS home victory since 2000. The ball flew to the other side of the stadium and at last Seattle had something to cheer for in the 8th inning.
Michelle Agyemang: England went into the tournament with hopes of defending their prior win in 2022. Quickly though in the knockout stages, things weren’t working out how they were hoping for the reigning winners. Michelle Agyemang, was the solution, being awarded best young player in the tournament. Agyemang scored the game winning goal against Sweden in the quarter finals after England trailed the entirety of the game and in stoppage time against Italy in the semis.
Fernando Mendoza: This one is still a work in progress and the season for the Hoosiers still is up for grabs at the time I’m writing this but missing the Indiana quarterback felt like a disservice to college football. Mendoza has led Indiana to an undefeated season leading D1 football in touchdowns with 36 and only 6 interceptions on the season. Fernando Mendoza also has created history by being the only player from Indiana to ever win the Heisman trophy.
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone Sets T & F Record: Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone is someone who has been breaking and setting records in the 400 m (including relays and hurdles) and winning 4 gold medals in the last two Olympics set the championship record at the Track and Field Championship in Tokyo. McLaughlin-Levrone ran the 400m flat competing against three of the fastest women of all time and set the record with 47.78 seconds not only becoming the world champion but also the first American women to run under 48 seconds flat.
Women’s Rugby on a Global Scale: Ilona Maher took social media and the world by storm in the 2024 summer Olympics and that attention brought attention to women’s rugby and that carried over into the following summer. The 2025 rugby world cup set attendance records with 81,885 spectators setting the highest attendance for a women’s rugby match.
